Chemical Engineering Principles

    Unit operations of chemical engineering has been a core course in specialty of chemical engineering since Changzhou University was founded in 1978. This course aims to make the students master various unit operations, process equipment and calculation methods, cultivate their practical abilities to analyze and solve problems, and lay a foundation for the further research. Fruitful results have been achieved in the curriculum reform and laboratory construction under the efforts of the older generation of Prof. Chenpu Zhao et al. Unit operations of chemical engineering course was awarded as "excellent" key course by the former Chemical Ministry in 1995. In 2004, this course was awarded as the first-class excellent courses of Jiangsu province guided by the famous teacher of Prof. Xiping Lin.

    Teaching step by step according to the specialty characteristics and requirements. In order to teach students in accordance of their aptitude, the course is scheduled 112 or 64 class hours and introduced the syllabus in different levels. For many hours of courses, we use the textbook written by Prof. Minheng Chen et al. in East China University of Science and Technology, and another textbook written by Prof. Zhikui Wang in Beijing University of Chemical Technology is provided for few hours of courses. In addition,Separation Processes and Equipmentscompiled by our university is used for students majored in process equipment and control process; Guidance for Unit Operationscompiled by our university is used as supplementary materials; Computer Applications of Chemical Engineering compiled by our university is used as auxiliary textbooks.

    Experiments in Chemical Engineering Principles is an important practical link in fostering creative talents. With the principle of " intensivism, integration, efficiency and innovation”, our group sucessfully developed over 40 international leading and domestic first-class experimental equipments such as DCS control packed distillation column. The laboratory construction has recieved wide acclaim from domestic and overseas experts and scholars. The comments made by academician Yong Jin are, “Keep pace with the times and dauntlessly make progress”. Academician Hongwen Hu says: “Pursue excellence and train petrochemical talents”. "Advanced theories and first-class facilities " says Prof. Zhenglong Chen, a professor at National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan.

    The topics of the course design is very close to the factory practical situation, which helps students form engineering concept and hance their learning effect. The teachers have rich engineering design experiences, two of whom Chinese government registered engineer in chemical design. After years of hardwork, great teaching achievements have been made in our group. Now, we have taken up 3 national and provincial projects, as well as more than 10 school-class topics in teaching reform, and published 3 sets of textbooks. We got four the first-class and the second-class provincial prizes of teaching achievements, and won the second and the third awards of multimedia courseware. At present our group consists of 19 full-time faculty members. Among them 11 are professors, 5 are associate professors, and 11 hold Ph.D. degrees. We own advanced equipments of 15,000,000 yuan in total value. The scientific research funds of approximately 30,000,000 yuan have been received within the last five years. In 2008, the teaching team of chemical engineering and technology was awarded the outstanding team in colleges and universities of Jiangsu province. In 2007, chemical engineering and technology was elected into the national characteristic specialty construction. Furthermore, the Basic Chemical Industry Experimental Center based on the principle of transport phenomena and reaction engineering was awarded provincial demonstration experimental centre.
